BAND OF THE IRISH GUARDS and the ROYAL REGIMENT OF SCOTLAND
In their debut U.S. tour, the evening featured a performance of the music of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Direct from the United Kingdom, the Band of the Irish Guards was joined by the pipes, drums and highland dancers of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Originally formed April 1, 1900 by Her Majesty Queen Victoria to commemorate the Irish regiments who had fought bravely in the South African campaigns, the regiment band first appeared the following year, their primary duty being to provide musical inspiration to troops, and traveled extensively throughout both World Wars. Included were marches, anthems, changing of the guards, music of the Royal Castles, broadsword and highland dancing, and a special tribute to the American Armed Forces. |
